Accelerated Reader Program

What is a TOPS report? and What is AR?
These might be a few questions that you may have.

Accelerated Reader is a computerized literature program that motivates children to read more books. AR, as it is referred to by students and staff, challenges students to become better readers.

It's as easy as 1-2-3!

1. Students select a book that is at their reading level.
2. Students read their book.
3. Students take a multiple-choice test on the computer.

This program provides the students with an instant score.
Students take pride in the points they earn.
Reading practice helps children become more proficient readers. The Accelerated Reader program provides that practice. Classroom teachers assist students in setting individual reading goals at their independent reading level. Data is collected so that classroom goals can also be set.  These goals can be seen on their TOPS Reports.

TOPS reports are "The Opportunity to Praise a Student".  These are computer print outs of your child's progress.  After a quiz is taken, a report is created.  This report details the students independent reading level, the number of quizzes taken, the number of points earned so far and the term point goal.  I read over these reports and sign them before sending them home.  You do not have to return the report but you should review the report with your child.

We go to the library every Thursday and the students choose one AR book.  They keep these books in class for reading.  The children are no longer taking them home as they are not always returned in a timely manner.  If you would like your child to bring a book home you may take them to the school library before or after school Tuesday - Thursday to check a book out.
