Sight Words

Dear Families,
Children can learn to "sound out" most words because the spellings match the sounds of our spoken words. However, some of the most common words, called sight words, are words your child must memorize. They do not usually follow the sounding out rules. Some sight words do follow the sounding out rules, however, they appear in a piece of reading so frequently it is a good idea to have these words memorized as well. The following activities will help your child to master many sight words.

Hear it- The helper tells you the word and uses it in a sentence.
See it- Look at the word.
Say it- Say it a few times.
Trace it-Trace the letters on the flashcard with your finger and practice saying the word.
Read it- Make up a sentence for the word. The helper can write it for you. Read the sentence.
Write it- Copy the word on another sheet of paper, in sand, clay, or other medium.
Review it- After a few minutes of another activity, go back to the word and identify it again.
